Not much I ...Glad if my talk was helpful, Stephen. Not much I can add to your masterly precis - and even more interesting personal gloss.

I agree with Doug that it's almost impossible for an author to know whether what it is in his/her head has got onto the page. That's why my talk was about fixing the problem, once someone else (someone informed, experienced and, preferably, commercially involved in the book's success) has told you there's a hole. In fact, it's best if you can get them to tell you WHERE it needs more emotion e.g. whole book, last quarter, a particular scene.

I've found that it's a terrible trap to think that, because the characters are emoting fit to rupture something, your readers will be feeling the emotion.

Can't wait to read Lord Alexander.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13786279.post-1153267105532933892006-07-19T00:58:00.000+01:002006-07-19T00:58:00.000+01:00Hey, you're back!Thoughtful, enjoyable post, Steph...Hey, you're back!

Thoughtful, enjoyable post, Stephen. In the story I'm writing, I think I've done a fair job creating two likable, engaging characters. But does the story succeed on the emotional level, as you describe? I suspect it's difficult if not impossible for the author to make that assessment. I'll have to pump my readers for more feedback.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
